HELD UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF THE GOVERNMENT OF NAMIBIA
Why Namibia?
Namibia has ambitious plans for a $9.4 billion green hydrogen project. This project is expected to create 15,000 jobs during construction and 3,000 permanent positions, with 90% of these jobs being filled by Namibians. At full-scale development, this project aims to produce 2 million tonnes of green ammonia annually by the end of the decade. It will utilise approximately 7 GW of renewable generation capacity and 3 GW of electrolyser capacity, significantly reducing 5-6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This reduction is substantial, considering Namibia’s total annual emissions in 2021 were 4.01 million tonnes.
Namibia aims to position itself as a leader in emerging green hydrogen markets and an international exporter of green hydrogen. This strategic move is expected to attract foreign investment, enhance energy security, and facilitate the country’s transition toward sustainable energy sources.
The Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance serves as a platform for collaboration between governments, the private sector, development finance institutions, and civil society. By fostering radical collaboration, setting policy frameworks, and securing long-term agreements, the alliance aims to drive Africa’s green hydrogen industry forward.
Namibia’s commitment to green hydrogen underscores its vision for a decarbonised future, job creation, and sustainable energy solutions.
